Local community resilience and organisation

Despite the lack of formal democratic institutions at local level (below local authorities), communities were quick to respond to the pandemic, create and encourage support for volunteering initiatives etc. Imagine what more might have been possible with greater decentralisation of resources and decision-making.

Points

Good example of how the Penicuik Storehouse responded, setting up delivery system and introducing veg box scheme.

In Dundee, there was a huge response from local people signing up to volunteer throughout the pandemic. Including: delivering essential food, medication and supplies to shielders and isolating people/families and reducing the impact of isolation. There was also a huge response from local people signing up to support the local roll-out of the Covid vaccination programme. Dundee is incredibly lucky to have so many people who cared about others and supported the beginning of recovery - the vaccine!
